1981–1987:The Founding of the UFO Group (Taiwan) and the Dawn of Taiwan’s Popular Music
The year 1983 saw the founding of the UFO Group. Its CEO Wu Chu-Chu had unique insight and invited the then four queens of the singing scene—Tsai Chin, Julie Su Rui, Tracy Huang, and Wang Chih-Lei—to join the UFO Group. At that time, Chen was still an independent freelancer. He participated in the arrangements of the soundtrack for the movie “Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing?” This album made Julie Su Rui famous. It was also well received by the market, selling well and firmly establishing the newly founded UFO Group in the industry. In 1984, Chen composed the theme song “The Last Night” for the movie “The Last Night of Madam Chin” adapted from Pai Hsien-Yung’s fiction. It was sung by Tsai Chin and caused a market sensation. These undying creations generated outstanding results, leading to the favorable cooperation between Chen and the UFO Group. In the mid-1980s, Chen became a dedicated music creator and arranger for the UFO Group. His pairing with Fred Chen and the outstanding musicians Chen Ta-Li and Chen Hsiu-Nan earned them the name “The Four Chens of the UFO Group,” and they were the core at the center of the creation of the UFO Group.
