1981–1987:The Founding of the UFO Group (Taiwan) and the Dawn of Taiwan’s Popular Music

After folk music declined in popularity, Taiwan’s music industry entered an experimental stage. Famous producers such as Lee Shou-Chuan, as well as Li Jian-Fu and Tsai Chin, founded Tien Shui Le Ji and experimented with a new style for folk songs. In 1982, Chiu Chen, a creator of the folk song period, participated in the founding of the Chiu Chiu Choir with Delphine “Wawa” Chin as the lead singer and released “It’s Tonight.” The song was in the rock music style, which was extremely rare in that era. In 1983, Yvonne Yi, who debuted as a folk singer, released the album “Light Rain Came Just in Time” with the emerging producer Lee Chun-Shan. The arrangements made these albums drastically different from folk songs while retaining their charm. They officially led Taiwan’s popular music into a new dawn. The hero behind the scenes for these critical albums during the transformation of Taiwan’s popular music in the post-folk song period was the arranger Chen Chih-Yuan.
