Wendy Fitzwilliam, who was crowned Miss Universe in 1998, dons the traditional feathered costume from the Caribbean's Jamaican Carnival. The vibrant, blooming feathers fill the frame with dynamic energy, as if boldly proclaiming the strength and beauty of women. The island nations of the Caribbean are known for their captivating and vibrant charm, especially the world-famous Jamaican Carnival, also referred to as Jamaica's Carnival. The carnival originally emerged from the hardships of enslaved people on the Caribbean islands during colonial rule, where they sought joy and self-expression amid adversity. Over time, it evolved into a significant festival reflecting local cultural identity. During the festival each year, countless tourists from around the globe flock to the region to partake in the unique traditional activities, immerse themselves in the world-renowned reggae music of Central America, and revel in the passionate and lively atmosphere. The powerful rhythm of the music is perfectly matched by the dances that accompany it, with the dancers in the carnival parade wearing traditional costumes—the same feathered attire seen on Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam in the photograph. Photographer Jodi Cobb, an adventurer who has traveled the world capturing the unique beauty of women, was the first to gain close access to Japanese geishas, offering the world a rare glimpse into this mysterious and beautiful profession. As a woman herself, Jodi brings a deeply empathetic and insightful perspective to celebrating the strength of women. During the 1998 Miss Universe competition, she captured the radiant beauty of women, immortalizing Wendy crowning moment. As Miss Universe, Wendy shared the beauty of her country’s traditional attire with the world—a glorious moment that epitomized the power of women.
