Female performers at Wakulla Springs transformed into mermaids, executing graceful ballet moves underwater. To excel at this unique job, women had to perform for 30 minutes while smiling and breathing through hidden air hoses in six feet of limestone-filtered water. Each year, as many as 500,000 visitors came to watch the Wakulla mermaids, who enjoyed special privileges in Florida thanks to their remarkable work.
