Shi Shijie

Shi Shijie / Five-character Couplet in Regular Script 1856–1922 170 x 45 cm (x2), Collection No. 2022-1037 Text Translation: Autumn bears the essence of spring, Jade embodies golden elegance. Inscription: By Shi Jie, courtesy name Naigong, while residing as a guest in Xiamen. Description: This five-character couplet is another work by Shi Shijie, a Jinshi from Tainan, showcased in this special exhibition. Written in gold characters on a red background, the couplet lacks a dedicatory inscription, leaving its specific purpose unclear. However, the celebratory tone and phrases like “jade embodies golden elegance,” which praise beauty or virtue, suggest that it commemorates or extols a person or event of significance. The inscription notes that the piece was created during Shi’s time as a guest in Xiamen, likely after the 1895 cession of Taiwan to Japan, when Shi relocated to Xiamen for work.
