1868-1928 Zheng Jiazhen/ Foreword to General Historica of Taiwan by Zhou Weijin 42.9X73.4cm Zheng Jiazhen / Foreword to General Historica of Taiwan by Zhou Weijin 1868–1928 42.9 x 73.4 cm, Collection No. 2019-1-0130 Description: Zheng Jiazhen, courtesy name Baisuo, sobriquet Xueting, was a native of Dongshi Village outside Zhuchien City (modern-day Hsinchu). In 1894, he achieved success in the provincial imperial examination. Following the fall of Hsinchu to Japanese forces in 1895, Zheng’s family relocated to Quanzhou, Nanan, where he established a private academy. In 1919, due to revolutionary turmoil, Zheng returned to Hsinchu and resided there for eight years. During this time, he served as a tutor for Zheng Zhaoji (1885–1937) of Beimen and taught at various private residences, including those of Wu Gengxinzhai in Shuitian and Zheng Xikang in Dongshi. He also mentored members of Hsinchu’s “Luantan Society,” guiding their poetry and literary pursuits. This piece is Zheng Jiazhen’s foreword to General Historica of Taiwan, authored by his fellow townsman, Zhou Weijin. In 1926, upon reading Zhou’s account of Taiwan’s cession in 1895, Zheng was deeply moved by the righteous indignation of the island’s people and the tearful lamentations of loyal officials. The foreword reflects Zheng’s sorrow and admiration for their resilience. Unfortunately, aside from this preface, no complete surviving copies of Zhou’s work are known.
