Dry Dock

A dry dock is a designated area for the maintenance and repair of fishing boats. The term "dry docking" refers to lift boats out of the water to inspect and service their hulls. In the past, boats on Sun Moon Lake had to rely on private dry docks, where they were manually pulled ashore for maintenance. This method was not only time-costing and labor-intensive but also relatively expensive. Today, the establishment of a public dry dock equipped with mechanized systems has significantly improved the efficiency of boat repairs and indirectly enhanced the travel experience for visitors. From the dry dock, walking right along the Lakeside Trail leads to Chaowu Pier, the farthest point on this path. Walking left connects to Year of Steps at Wenwu Temple, which ascends to Wenwu Temple. Initially constructed as a wooden boardwalk, the Lakeside Trail was gradually upgraded to its current concrete form with the growing popularity of cycling. During the construction process, great care was taken to minimize the impact on the surrounding natural environment. For example, some trees grow right in the middle of the trail. To protect them, the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Headquarters installed small, octagonal wooden barriers around the trees, adjusting the spacing as the trees grow. If a tree dies, the resulting hole in the trail is filled in to maintain its usability. These thoughtful details demonstrate the region's respect for the natural environment and its commitment to harmonious coexistence. Visitors can enjoy the convenience of the trail while appreciating the care and effort invested in preserving this unique landscape.
