Cindy Chao grew up in an artistic family, influenced by her architect grandfather and sculptor father, Zhao An-Yu. Her father, known for his Dunhuang stone sculptures, taught her that capturing the "spirit" is key to great art, saying, "Every piece must be full of life. Observe with your eyes, feel with your heart, and create with your soul."
In 2011, Cindy and her father collaborated on the "The Stag Brooch," featuring a 10.07-carat Colombian emerald. This brooch, blending abstract lines with realistic form, was their first and last joint creation, as her father passed away shortly after. The piece symbolises their unspoken bond and holds deep personal meaning for Cindy.
As one of the few jewellery artists to work in wax, Cindy uses 18th-century techniques passed down from European royalty, continuing her father’s legacy in her art. The "The Stag Brooch" remains a tribute to his lasting influence on her creative journey.
