Diamond-Pattern Glass Lampshade

Din You-Wei

Ding You-Wei’s innovative "silver clear bubble technique" caught the attention of a renowned custom lighting brand, Aboon Lighting, with a 50-year legacy. Introduced by his mentor, Ding was invited by Aboon’s owner to collaborate long-term, becoming their exclusive in-house glass artisan. He was entrusted with all custom glass lampshade orders, requiring him to overcome diverse challenges, refine his craft, and develop new techniques. His work spans mold-making, glass artistry, and post-processing, breaking the traditional segmented roles of the glass industry. This glass lampshade originated from a client’s simple request for "diamond patterns." Due to the high cost of molds for small-batch orders, Ding ingeniously repurposed industrial iron mesh as a mold. He placed softened glass into the mesh and blew it into shape. Remarkably, his second attempt yielded stunning results. The sharp diamond lines and the gentle, protruding glass texture created a striking contrast, while the interplay of light and shadow enhanced the glass’s intricate beauty. Din You-Wei, the founder of the glass craft brand Dinglass and a custom glass lighting artisan for ABOON Lighting, was born in 1992 and graduated from the Department of Crafts and Design at National Taiwan University of the Arts. His journey into glasscraft began during his sophomore year, inspired by a passionate young professor and the encouragement of his peers. Immersed in the campus glass studio, Din discovered his calling in the art of glassmaking. Though he describes himself as an underachieving student who struggled academically, glasscraft became a transformative turning point in his life. It ignited his passion and solidified his dedication to the field. Din developed the innovative Silver Clear Bubble Glass technique and, driven by a relentless creative spirit, incorporated Italy's rare traditional glassmaking method, "Roller Mosaic," into his work.Today, Din pushes the boundaries of conventional glass industry practices. Through both his artistic creations and bespoke designs, he continues to explore the evolving possibilities of glasscraft, redefining its potential with every piece he creates.
