"I once met an elderly master jeweler, around 80 years old, who had devoted his entire life to metalworking, focusing on perfecting this craft to the extreme. His determination and dedication were truly admirable. In that moment, I deeply felt the stark contrast."
In the past, metalwork was primarily sold through traditional jewelry stores or department store counters, often closely associated with major jewelry brands. However, Innie + Outie has been based in the rural areas of Tainan for years. Beyond participating in exhibitions and events in other cities to increase popularity, they have also built a strong presence on social media. By showcasing their works online, shaping their brand identity, and accepting custom orders through digital platforms, they have transcended the limitations of brick-and-mortar stores, creating an entirely new economic model. The 'Miniature Tools' series was born from this approach. Initially, they crafted jewelry inspired by the tools they were familiar with and commonly used in metalwork. Over time, they began receiving custom requests from various professions, including woodworking tools, barber scissors, musical instruments, stethoscopes, and even needles used by anesthetists. These customized pieces, deeply connected to different professions, personal interests, and expertise, not only provide professionals with unique, personalized accessories but also serve as great gifts. By bridging functionality and artistry, Innie + Outie’s creations have become more than justjewelry—they are culturally significant and deeply personal keepsakes.
Innie + Outie Metal Art Studio
Innie + Outie Metal Art Studio was co-founded by Wang Yu-Llin and Chou Chi-En in 2014. The studio's name, 'Qijia,' originates from the Taiwanese dialect pronunciation of 'starting a home,' symbolizing their dream of building a craft legacy step by step. Though the two founders have distinct specialties and creative styles, they share a common vision—to seamlessly integrate traditional metalworking techniques with modern design, offering a unique interpretation of beauty in everyday life.
The studio's 'Miniature Tools' series is particularly impressive. These tiny yet meticulously crafted tools—such as scissors, paint palettes, and pour-over coffee kettles—undergo intricate metalworking processes, resulting in exquisitely detailed, collectible art pieces. Through their work, they redefine metalworking not only as a traditional craft but also as a medium for storytelling and emotional expression. Each year, their 'Red Envelope Series' combines metalworking techniques with the design of traditional red envelopes, creating pieces that embody both festive charm and contemporary style. This series introduces a wider audience to the boundless possibilities of metal art, making it both culturally rich and trendsetting.
