Introduced in 1890, the Polyphon 104 is a floor-standing disc music box that plays melodies using large metal discs perforated with pre-set patterns. As the disc rotates, metal tines are plucked by the slots, producing bright and delicate tones. These music boxes were luxury items, often found in upper-class homes. The disc measures 19⅝ inches in diameter. The machine includes a coin slot mechanism—users had to wind the spring and insert a coin to activate playback.
