Written by Chen Jyun-yu and completed on January 18, 1933, "A Maiden’s Lament" expresses resistance to feudal traditions and societal constraints on women. Taiwan Columbia first recorded the song in September 1933 with singer Lin Shih-hao. A second recording by Hsueh-lan was made at the end of the following year, and her version was ultimately selected for release. Lin’s original recording remained unreleased for over 90 years. In 2018, Professor Wang Ying-fen of National Taiwan University’s Graduate Institute of Musicology rediscovered Lin’s version. In collaboration with the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka, the original sound was digitized and brought back to Taiwan, uncovering a long-lost piece of musical history.
