Pop music hit record list

This chart shows the weekly sales rankings for Chinese pop songs from December 1983. Note the column listing the arrangers of each song. Fourteen of the top 30 songs on the list, almost half, were arranged by Chen Chih-Yuan. This was no coincidence. Having started to arrange songs in the late 1970s, Chen continued to do so into the late 1980s, when he signed an exclusive contract with the UFO Group preventing Chen from arranging songs for other record companies. The lists of hit records in the pop music scene were commonly dominated by Chen. At that time, the two important shows that reported the weekly rankings for pop music in the 1990s had not yet started. One was the show “Buddy Music Time”, which aired on the Broadcasting Corporation of China with Lou Hsiao-Yun as the DJ. The other one was the TV show “Golden Song Hero’s Ranking” hosted by Hugua Hu on the Chinese Television System (CTS). The text beneath the chart states that the organization that conducted the survey and produced the rankings was the TV show “Entertainment 100”, which was hosted by Chang Hsiao-Yen and aired on CTS. At the time, it was one of the most important sources of information about pop music for people in Taiwan.
