Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877 using cylindrical records. While innovative, cylinders were hard to duplicate and unsuitable for mass production. Emile Berliner later introduced the flat disc, which became the standard for commercial use. In Taiwan, commercial records began with 78 RPM discs. Though Edison’s cylinder format was never widely adopted here, his invention marked a major milestone in the history of recorded sound.
