Released in 1934 and performed by Chun-chun, “Tree of Longing” is a Taiwanese-language adaptation of the American hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, composed by Charles C. Converse. The Taiwanese lyrics were written by Jo-meng, with a musical arrangement by the Taiwan Columbia Literary and Artistic Department.
In the 1930s, alongside original compositions, a few translated or adapted songs appeared in Taiwan’s pop music scene. This song marked the earliest Taiwanese adaptation of the hymn, which later became widely known in Christian churches after the war under the title “Jesus, Our Friend (Yēsū ēn-yǒu)”.
