Stéphane Kara and Jeffrey Cheng, arrangement by Tzu-Chin Hsu: Inspiring Formosa: From Mirage to Mirror The suite Inspiring Formosa: From Mirage to Mirror is a 21st-century hymn to the essence of Taiwan, capturing the richness of its culture, history, and spirit. Adapted from the film scores of director Wu Mi-sen—often called the “Poet from the Moon”—the work includes compositions by the award-winning film composer Stéphane Kara, who received the Best Music Award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Each movement is a musical tribute to the resilience, diversity, and creativity of the Taiwanese people. From the island’s soul to its towering mountains, the melodies weave together a vibrant tapestry of emotions, experiences, and aspirations. This is a journey through time and space, bringing listeners to the very heart of Taiwan’s landscapes, legends, and dreams. In the opening movement, the majestic sound of the organ merges seamlessly with a modern sensibility, reflecting the dynamic spirit of Taiwan’s new generation. The work is a musical exploration of life’s complexities—from the joy of discovery to the challenges of transformation. As the organ’s resonance fills the air, the audience is invited on a transformative journey, traversing the seasons of the soul. ⸻ Tzu-Chin Hsu: Journey to Formosa In early 2024, organist Hsiao-I Yu collaborated with composer Tzu-Chin Hsu to commission Journey to Formosa. The phrase “Journey to Formosa” refers both to an actual voyage to Taiwan and to a symbolic quest for beauty and fulfillment. This work draws on the spirit of Austronesian culture, embodying the Taiwanese as a seafaring people who must explore and take risks against headwinds in order to create and survive. Just as artists must continually innovate to discover themselves, the piece expresses an attitude of pressing forward with positivity even in the face of adversity. The composition pays homage to the iconic film score of Interstellar and to Bach’s Toccata in D minor, drawing inspiration from both classics. It can be heard as a maritime adventure in three sections: •The opening begins with a saxophone passage that slowly unfolds the theme, symbolizing gazing at the stars in the night sky while awaiting the sunrise that signals departure. Like a Gregorian chant melody, it also subtly echoes the Bach chorale heard earlier in the program, weaving the saxophone’s voice into continuity. •The journey then begins as the organ takes over, joined by strings and percussion, representing the first rays of dawn illuminating the voyage. •In the middle section, the driving rhythms of percussion depict crashing waves, while organ and saxophone exchange solo passages in resistance, conjuring the imagery of navigating through tempests. The pace intensifies, with all voices interwoven to confront the turbulence of the journey. •Finally, calm returns after the storm: the main theme from the opening reemerges, symbolizing a crew undaunted by the sea, moving forward together into the unknown. Through this narrative arc, the piece encapsulates the spirit of the entire concert: ancient melodies, tributes to the classics, and the unfolding of new contemporary works for the organ in a modern idiom.
