永續 Sustainability

Sustainability Environment × Material × Social Relationships Practicing Craft as a Philosophy of Life In the core value of SLOHAS, sustainability is not merely a goal, but a craftful attitude—naturally embedded in the fabric of everyday life. From the choice of materials and methods of making, to the relationships built with local and community, craft embodies the daily practice of coexisting with nature and living in reciprocity with others. Beginning with Regenerative Materials|Awareness and Reverence for Resources The foundation of sustainable craft lies in a deep understanding and respect for the very essence of materials. Wood, bamboo, ceramics, fiber, and metal each carry inherent natural qualities and local contexts—together, they form the essential language of craft. In contemporary practice, Craft is no longer merely the continuation of form; it now responds to the urgent call for resource circulation and reuse, opening new journeys of life for materials through the act of creation. Coexisting with Place|Sustainability through Local Connection Locality is both the root of cultural identity and a tangible ground for sustainable development. Craft engages deeply with the landscape and rhythms of a place. From material sourcing and design to everyday use, it fosters a low-carbon, low-impact system of “locally made, locally used.” When craft becomes a way of living that responds to local needs, it creates not only cultural value but a sustainable way of life. Weaving Relational Networks|Craft as a driving force for empathy and collaboration. The role of contemporary craft is shifting—from individual expression to a social interface. By entering communities, schools, tourism, and businesses, craft activates networks of participation and shared experience. Through the ongoing weaving of emotional threads between people and place, craft becomes a medium for cross-disciplinary empathy and collaborative action. From small, quiet choices in everyday life, sustainability slowly unfolds. The power of craft to realize sustainability lies not in grand declarations, but in attentiveness to materials, respect for land, and long-term investment in human relationships. This slow, empathetic, and symbiotic rhythm of making opens a path toward a sustainable aesthetics of everyday life—one that is quietly, yet distinctly, rooted in Taiwan.
