Soil Plan”: Samples, “Soil Plan”: Vases
Tu Xing Studio initially worked with purchased clay for their creations but found that the quality of commercially available clay varied greatly, with noticeable differences in texture and color between batches. This inconsistency prompted founders Peng Yi-Hsuan and Huang Hung-Yu to explore and collect local soils across Taiwan for analysis and experimentation.
They discovered that soil conditions varied by region, and each piece recorded the traces of the environment and time. Through the "Soil Plan’s" soil samples, one can not only touch local emotions but also see the diversity and value of the land. With this concept in mind, Tu Xing Studio uses local soils to create functional pottery, blending artistry with everyday life to produce practical items. Additionally, this project also encourages more creators to join this cultural movement by providing public data and firing results, promoting the possibilities of creating with local soil.
Tu Xing Studio
Tu Xing Studio was established in 2014, co-managed by ceramic artist Huang Hung-Yu and visual artist Peng Yi-Hsuan, dedicated to exploring the deep connection between ceramics and the land. With a shared love for the land of Taiwan, they collect soil from various regions and transform the different types of soil into ceramic artworks, initiating the "Soil Plan."
This project focuses on gathering soil samples from different areas in Taiwan, subjecting them to firing and experimentation to uncover the distinctive properties and possibilities of each type of soil. Carefully selected and tested, these soil samples are ultimately transformed into ceramic works of artistic value, reflecting the vitality of the land and the cultural essence of their origins. Beyond creating art, Tu Xing Studio actively hosts ceramic courses and workshops, offering more people the opportunity to engage with ceramics and experience the creative process. Through these activities, the studio not only promotes ceramic craftsmanship but also fosters collaboration and exchange among artists, bringing a fresh perspective to Taiwan’s ceramic art landscape.
