傳統掌中戲偶多數在8寸到到9寸之間，配合操偶動作之需求，設計衣飾、盔帽、道具等輔助工具，為布袋戲表演藝術中不可或缺的專門技術，用以演繹主角個性，有畫龍點睛的效果。
旦：女性角色依年齡及髮型變化，大致可分為女童旦(未成年女性)、齊眉旦(未出嫁女性)、開面旦(中年已婚)、黲旦(中老年)、白毛旦(老年)。此外還有嫺旦(婢女)、女扮(女扮男裝)、花面旦(面貌醜陋、番女)、毒旦(陰險毒辣)、散髮旦(落魄、逃難)、卻老旦(三姑六婆)等等。
Most of the puppets range in size from 8 to 9 inches. Traditional palm puppets convey the character's personality through their costumes. The specific shapes, exquisite clothing, helmets, weapons, and props used are indispensable in the performing arts of puppetry and serve to interpret the protagonist's personality.
Dan: Female roles vary according to age and hairstyle and can be roughly divided into categories such as children, unmarried women, middle-aged married women, and elderly women. Additionally, there are maidservants, women disguised as men, unattractive women, prostitutes, sinister women, fleeing women, and women from various professions.
