Pan Ya Li

"Plants remind me in wonderful ways that they can feel human greed. If we take too much, the native Alpinia may not grow next year." Pan Ya-Li’s native Alpinia leaf woven goods began as a market stall venture. In the first three years of her business, she actively participated in various markets, carefully displaying her products to attract attention and appreciation. As she gained experience, she also began teaching, sharing the weaving skills with more people and further spreading recognition and inheritance of this craft. As Pan Ya-Li’s reputation grew, her works were showcased at events like the Taiwan Cultural Expo, Pop-Up Asia, and Tokyo Gift Fair. She also collaborated with organizations such as the Pingtung County Government and the Council of Indigenous Peoples, bringing Alpinia leaf crafts to international audiences. In her product design, she blends traditional craftsmanship with modern practicality, using simplified coin purses and wallets as examples. Through patchwork, she reinterprets indigenous clothing, creating culturally rich yet accessible designs that balance innovation with wider market appeal. Pan Ya-Li, a Paiwan artisan from Majia Township in Pingtung County, is deeply committed to preserving and promoting the cultural art of Alpinia (shell flower) weaving.
