The Co-creation Workshop 'Yii+' in 2023 – Project documentary film

National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute

The Yii+ Project ▍Facing the Future|Yii+ Pioneers a Metaverse Future for Taiwanese Craft As the physical and virtual worlds converge, the metaverse is becoming a vital space for cultural creation, perception, and identity. Rooted in visual language, identity, and interaction, this new reality calls for craft to move beyond being seen as mere objects. Its value lies not only in the final product, but in the passing down of skills, cultural meaning, and the relationships between people and materials. With new mediums reshaping the world, craft must evolve. In response, Yii+ emerges as an experimental brand of future craft—one that explores how craft can exist and endure in a hybrid realm where the virtual and physical meet. In the metaverse, Taiwanese craft will not—and must not—be absent. ▍2023|Crafting a Cultural Vocabulary from Faith and Ritual The project began with Taiwan's most distinctive cultural sources: folk beliefs and traditional crafts. Temples, paper offerings, deities, and folk troupes—symbols rooted in daily life—became starting points for design reinterpretation. Through contemporary approaches, ten cross-disciplinary designers reimagined these archetypes, breaking from conventional frameworks to shape a future-facing cultural vocabulary. Meanwhile, digital tools such as 3D scanning and image layering translated physical crafts into virtual structures—laying the groundwork for interaction and building a scalable, recognizable virtual identity system for Taiwan. ▍2025|Relaunching Craft Experiments in Mixed Reality After a pause in 2023, the Yii+ project was revived in 2025 by original lead Pei-Ling Sun, who continued the work with limited resources—prioritizing mixed-reality interaction and early development of a Spatial-based virtual platform. This is not a final product, but a forward-looking test run. Design modules and virtual vocabularies from 2023 became the digital groundwork for a scalable metaverse prototype. A planned physical concept store—meant as a key node between virtual and real—was never realized. This exhibition revisits that idea, merging spatial design and interaction to outline Yii+'s direction and strategy. More than a substitute display, it is an early, self-led experiment in shaping the virtual world—a grassroots future lab for Taiwanese craft.
